Circe

Title: Circe A Novel

Author: Madeline Miller

Genre: Fantasy, Greek Mythology

Pages: 385 Pages

Synopsis:

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child – not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power – the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

My Thoughts:

When I heard this was a book about Greek Mythology and it was about the first Witch in Literature, I was immediately on board. I always loved Greek Mythology as there is a lot of great stories such as The Trials of Heracles, Jason and the Argonauts, the war between Zeus and the Titans, etc.

Circe tells the story of a lesser Goddess named Circe. Circe is the first Witch in Literature and plays a small part in the book The Odyssey. She is the daughter of Helios, the God of Sun. She was born without any powers until she discovers them when trying to win a love interest. She gets exiled for using her powers on an Island and the rest of the book is her story while being on this Island. The book definitely had a lot of Greek Mythology represented in it and I think that’s my favourite part of the novel. We got to see the origins of the Minotaur, met Odysseus and plenty of Greek Gods.

Circe is an interesting character, she is a powerful person as she is a witch. She is a badass with her magic, and she grows stronger and bolder when she experiences injustice.

However, this story is fine but it didn’t really blow my mind or anything. It was just an okay story. There were some parts of the story that seemed to drag for a bit.

I would recommend this book if you want to read a powerful main character and if you love Greek Mythology.
